For most of medical history we thought hydrogen was just another inert gas with no real medical applications. All of that changed in 2007, when a group of researchers published their findings in medical journal showing that hydrogen is actually a unique and highly-effective antioxidant in the human body.

Since then, there have been over 1000 peer-reviewed studies showing that molecular hydrogen has applications for over 170 different bodily processes.

How can there be so many applications?

It has a lot to do with something called oxidative stress. In a nutshell, oxidative stress is a damaging process that occurs when the body has too many free radicals and not enough antioxidants to keep them in check.

Oxidative stress causes damage to the body’s cells, tissues, and proteins, which causes a wide range of discomfort. Molecular hydrogen (H2) is an antioxidant that reduces oxidative stress by uniquely targeting the most harmful free radicals. So it makes sense that the H2 supplement has many applications to help optimize the body.

Where do free radicals come from?

Throughout our entire lives, our bodies are bombarded by free radicals. They often come from various environmental sources, such as air pollution, heavy metals, pesticides, tobacco smoke, alcohol, etc. However, they are also created through normal metabolic processes in the body.

Free radicals are highly-reactive molecules that attack healthy cells, proteins, and DNA in order to stabilize. The damage they cause to the body is irreversible, which is why preventative measures are preferred whenever possible.

In fact, the free radical theory of aging holds that damage from free radicals is the primary biochemical process that causes the aging process. As we age, our internal defense system declines, allowing oxidative stress to accumulate, resulting in cell damage, disease, and eventually death.

Why not just take antioxidants as we age?

This idea makes sense based on everything we’ve just discussed. However, it turns out that research on antioxidants is really mixed. Sometimes they help and sometimes they make things worse.

This is because most antioxidants are like antibiotics. They’re not selective with what they target, and they’ll simply wipe out any free radicals they come into contact with. The thing is, just as with bacteria in our bodies, there are both good and bad free radicals. Some free radicals play important roles in our bodies, for immune system health and cellular communication.
